How to facilitate micro-learning

Micro-Learning is all about delivering bite-sized learning that’s going to allow your learners greater opportunity to receive and absorb your information. Micro-learning is easy to deliver with Bracken, at the latest eTraining session Cara Negri discussed the benefits and best practices of micro-learning, as well as provided some insight into how Bracken can help you facilitate this.

Benefits of micro-learning

  • Increase in engagement, short modules are key as after 8 minutes engagement dips and after 20 learners are likely to be completely gone.
  • Greater retention of information
  • Greater transfer of skills/information into the workplace
  • Quick course development
  • Mobile delivery gives learners the ability to learn anywhere with ease

Best Practice

  • Make sure modules take 10 mins or less
  • Clearly, state time to complete, it's nice for your learner to know how much time they are going to have to invest in a module
  • Keep videos less than 4 mins
  • Branching or options, giving learners the ability to choose the modules they do at what time
  • Mobile delivery
  • Less is more

Extra tips for Micro-learning:

  • Don't just dump content on your learners, delivering bite-sized content refers to focusing on a single objective and delivering it to your learners in a way that’s going to engage them start to finish.
  • Cut to the chase, there's no point including unnecessary information, stick to what's relevant and keep your content crisp.
  • Group similar and relevant information in your modules, this keeps the objective of the module obvious and the underlying connection between various chunks of information aids retention and reduces cognitive load.
  • Create user-friendly design, no one wants huge chunks of text in front of them, the daunting task of reading it is enough to make anyone's brain switch off. Include a range of interesting media to maintain engagement and minimise boredom.
  • Personalise content, make your learners feel special by giving them what they need. Design your content to ensure your learners are only getting content that’s relevant to them, letting them follow a path according to their needs at their own pace and time.
